The Museum of Decorative Arts of the Indian Ocean

With its extensive collection of artworks, this Réunion museum is a certified "Museum of France". The MADOI is located at the heart of an old coffee plantation.

The Museum of Decorative Arts of the Indian Ocean (MADOI) is located in Saint-Louis, on an old estate, the Maison Rouge. The last coffee plantation on the island, it dates back to the 18th century.

The museum deploys its rich collection of furniture, textiles, Chinese porcelain, artworks etc. into a varied programme of temporary exhibitions. You will also find a room dedicated to turtles, identifying three different themes: the legends and mythology surrounding this creature in various civilisations, the use of its scales in history, and the contemporary creation of art with a workshop presenting scaling craftsmanship. The MADOI also organises guided tours focusing on the historical, architectural and agricultural dimensions of the great coffee plantation in the area around the Maison Rouge. Tours on the history of Bourbon coffee (the original name of the island) are also offered.

Check out the MADOI's workshops and events on its website.
