FESTIVALS, HOLIDAYS AND OTHER ANNUAL EVENTS IN Lisbon

There are a number of festivals, holidays and other events celebrated in Lisbon each year. The main ones are listed below.

Lisbon rings in the New Year with street parties, concerts and a fireworks display on the banks of the Tagus near the Torre de Belém.

This holiday celebrates the Carnation Revolution on this day in 1974 that brought an end to the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar and restored democracy in Portugal. Festivities include live music and dancing in the streets.

Celebrated as Portugal's national day, this holiday also commemorates the death, on June 10, 1580, of the country's most famous poet, Luis de Camões. A huge fireworks display is launched from barges on the banks of the Tagus.

Commemorates the overthrow of Portugal's constitutional monarchy by republican forces on this day in 1910 and the founding of the first Portuguese Republic. An official ceremony is held outside Lisbon's city hall.

This day commemorates the restoration of Portuguese independence from Spain in 1640 and is celebrated in the streets of the city with various festivities, including parades, meals and concerts.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport

Lisbon-Portela Airport is located approximately 6 kilometres (4 miles) from the city centre.

• Two terminals:
  • Terminal 1 (Air France)
  • Terminal 2

• By car
  • Accessible via A1 motorway, then turning off at exit 3. Travel time around 15 minutes.
  • ANA parking lots, from EUR 5 per day.
  • Several car rental companies have counters in the arrivals hall at Terminal 1.
• By rail
  • The Red Line of the Lisbon Metro connects the airport to the city centre in about 30 to 40 minutes, from 6.30 am to 1 am and a single ticket costs EUR 1.45.
• Aerobus shuttle
  • Buses of line 91 depart every 20 minutes between 7 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. A one-way ticket costs EUR 3.60 and is valid for 24 hours from the first use on the Aerobus network. Travel time is about 25 minutes.
• Carris bus lines
  • Lines 5, 8, 22, 44, 45 and 83 connect the airport to the city centre. Please note that luggage is not allowed on line 22. EUR 1.85 one way. Travel time of about 25 minutes.
• By taxi
  • Taxis are available at the ranks outside the arrivals hall at Terminal 1. The trip to the centre of Lisbon takes about 15 minutes. Average fare to the centre is EUR 12-20.

GETTING AROUND Lisbon

Lisbon is a city very well served by its public transport system. In addition, the underground trains, trams, buses and funiculars all have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive. Of course, the best way to discover the city is by foot.

Tram 28

Tram 28 passes by a large number of interesting sites across the city's oldest neighbourhoods. Tickets can be purchased aboard the tram, the cost is EUR 2.90.

Useful tip: You may also obtain a magnetic card for greater convenience and significant savings. Charge it with a specific number of desired travels.

By rail

With the Lisbon Metro, you can quickly reach any destination in the city. Just take a train on one of the four lines in the network. A single trip costs EUR 1.45.

By bus

With its many bus lines, the Carris network covers virtually the entire city. Tickets cost EUR 1.85, not including transfers. No discounts.

By taxi

Taxis are inexpensive and efficient, and drivers usually pleasant! Fares to the city centre are about EUR 6 to EUR 9. Baggage supplement of EUR 1.60, no matter the number.

On foot

Walking is also a great alternative for visiting the city. Lisbon's architecture and natural setting are exceptional. Exploring on foot is perhaps the best way to enjoy the spirit of this magnificent city!

Administrative formalities

Entry requirements for Portugal

Travellers from the Schengen area, as well as those from the countries of the European Union not included in the area, need only be in possession of a national identity card or a passport valid for the duration of their stay in order to enter Portugal.

As a general rule, all other travellers are subject to visa requirements, although citizens of some countries may enter Portugal for a short stay of up to 90 days without a visa.
