From the moment the stark outline of the capital’s defences come into view, Valletta’s military origins are unmistakable. Within its walls, the Maltese capital features straight streets lined with colourful wooden balconies displaying Italian and Arab influences. St. John’s Co-Cathedral dazzles with Baroque splendour. Nearby, Upper Barrakka Gardens, set over Grand Harbour, afford magnificent views of the Three Cities.

Take a "dgħajsa", the traditional water taxi that has been ferrying passengers between the islands for centuries, to explore these cities, journeying back to when the Knights of Malta defended the islands from Ottoman attacks. In Vittoriosa (Birgu), the Inquisitor’s Palace and Fort St. Angelo are souvenirs of the strategic importance of this fiercely defended city. Within the ancient castrum, the quiet cobbled streets contrast with the bustling waterfront where luxury yachts gleam in the sun. Senglea (Isla) offers more spectacular views from Gardjola Gardens, while Cospicua (Bormla), the sleepiest of the three cities, features churches and convents along peaceful streets.
